Electric car owner charged with theft after recharging his car in public
An electric-car owner in the United States was thrown in the slammer for 15 hours after using a public powerpoint to recharge his vehicle.
Kaveh Kamooneh, from Chamblee in the southern state of Georgia, was arrested and charged with theft after plugging in his Nissan Leaf for 20 minutes while waiting to collect his son from a tennis lesson at his school.
Kamooneh claims he was approached by a police officer within minutes of plugging-in his car and asked if he had permission from the school to use the powerpoint.
He admitted he didn’t ask anyone as there was "nobody around" because it was a Saturday morning.
The officer did not charge him on the spot, but instead filed a report and returned to his house 11 days with another officer to arrest him with theft by taking without consent.
"They arrested me at about 8 o’clock at night," Kamooneh told local television news network 11 Alive.
According to police records, he spent 15 hours in the Chamblee county jail for his alleged crime – which accounted for approximately five cents worth of electricity.
"He broke the law, he stole something that wasn’t his," said Chamblee police sergeant Ernesto Ford. "A theft is a theft."
Kamooneh has sought legal action to fight the charge, claiming it is similar to people who plug their mobile phones or computers into outlets in public areas without paying.
