Former chief, two other ex-cops convicted in security racket

Not much of a surprise in Chicago

A federal jury deliberated just five and a half hours today before convicting a the former police chief of suburban Melrose Park and two other former officers of fraud, extortion and racketeering. Federal prosecutors call the case a decade-long reign of corruption.

Former chief 61-year-old Vito Scavo was found guilty on all counts. Witnesses said he ordered police officers to work for a security guard company he controlled and squeezed businesses to hire the firm to provide security.

Scavo's attorneys argued that the allegations against him were false.

Also convicted were 53-year-old Gary Montino and 55-year-old Michael Wynn. Three other former officers have pleaded not guilty and are to be tried later.
